What to expect in your first Silks class by Rach Mayes

If you’re reading this, you’re probably just as excited as I was when I started my journey into the world of Aerial Silks. I’m here to share what you can expect from your very first class!

  1. A Warm Welcome
The moment you step into the studio, get ready for a warm and friendly welcome. I’ll be there to greet you, introduce you to the space, and provide you with all the information you need. Please, feel free to ask any questions you might have, I’m here to help

  2. What to Wear
When it comes to attire, comfort and functionality are key. Wear snug-fitting clothes that cover your knees and tummy. Please avoid any jewellery or clothing with zips that might snag on the silks. In most cases, we’ll be practising in bare feet but you’re welcome to wear socks too!

  3. Safety First
I’ll go over essential safety guidelines and demonstrate the proper techniques for getting on and off the silks. If you’re ever uncertain about anything, just ask,  I’m happy to demo and explain as many times as necessary

  4. Warm-up Time
Before you start climbing and entering the wonderful world of aerial silks, we will start with a thorough warm up. This prepares your body for the physical demands ahead, helps prevent injuries, and enhances your overall performance during the class.

  5. Building Strength and Flexibility
Aerial silks require strength and flexibility. After our warm up we’ll start with conditioning exercises designed to help you build these essential foundations for your practice, some of these will be floor based and others with be using the silks.

  6. Basic Moves and Poses
One of the highlights of your first class is learning the basic moves and poses. Climbs, foot locks, and inversions are just some of the fundamental skills you’ll be introduced to. These are the building blocks of your aerial silks journey

  7. Spotting and Assistance
I’ll always be on hand to spot when needed. I’ll guide you through movements and offer hands-on assistance as needed to ensure your safety, proper form and understanding of the moves we are doing.

  8. Personal Progression
Remember, everyone progresses at their own pace. Don’t be disheartened if you can’t master every move right away. The journey is as important as the destination, and every step forward is something to be proud of.

  9. Cool Down and Reflection
At the end of the class we will have a cool-down session. It’s a chance for your muscles to recover and for you to reflect on what you’ve learned.

  10. A Supportive Community
Aerial silks students are a unique and supportive bunch. You’ll connect with other people who share your passion and make some great friends

  11. Fun and Creativity
Last but not least, remember that aerial silks is not just a physical exercise, it’s a way to express artistic elements too. As you gain confidence, you’ll have the opportunity to add your individual flair to the sequences and routines we learn, making each class a unique experience.
